Q1: I downloaded a new plugin and now Tray Helper crashes during start up! What do I need to do ?
Although it’s a VERY situation, it can happen. You will need to manually delete this plugin and reload it. Go to Tray Helper’s installation directory, select the Plugins subdirectory and delete the trouble-maker. Then follow the steps to re-install the plugin.
Q2: Tray Helper was a free application for a long time. Why do you ask me to pay for it now ?
As you know creating software requires a lot of time and effort. I had a choice: abandon this project and leave it free, or ask a small fee and be able to improve this application. The second option won. You can still download and use free version of Tray Helper - it's just less powerful than shareware one.
Q3: I have been using TH for some time on my PC at home, and now I’d like to use it at work as well. Is it possible to copy my events, reminders anti-spam filters etc. to another machine ?
SURE ! Tray Helper comes with BackUp tool. It's right now not accesable directly form Tray Helper. To launch it please go to Start menu of Windows and find Tray Helper group - then select BackUp. This tool has in current version some limitations (for example don't store configuration of plugins) - more about it in help file of Tray Helper.
Q4: You say that Tray Helper "eats" only a little of memory, but my Task Manager says that it is something around 5.3 MB ! Is that correct ?
Yes and no ! First of all you don't need to worry about it. Tray Helper itself
is a really small application - but it uses some components already built into Windows. Those components are dynamic link libraries (DLLs) - most of them
remain in memory even if you don't use Tray Helper. When you start this application, those libraries are not loaded a second time into memory (DLLs are shared) - but your Task Manager shows that Tray Helper uses them so it reports memory size bigger than actual in fact.
Q5: I have a web-based mail account on HOTMAIL, AOL or Yahoo - can I use Tray Helper to check those accounts ?
Unfortunately you can't do it without installing third-party software. Those web-based accounts are free but have some limitations. One most serious is that there is no POP3 access. I plan to write a plugin capable of pooling such kind of boxes - but it can take some time - since it's not an easy task.
You can check those accounts with Tray Helper after downloading small third-party software:
Read about YahooPops!
- it's FREE application that will give you acces to Yahoo Mail account.
Read about the ways how to check Hotmail account (and few others) with Tray Helper - on this page
Q6: I'm a modem user - do you have any tips for me ?
YUP - some modem-users reported that when starting Tray Helper each time, the auto-dialup window was appearing. You can disable this auto-dialup feature while using Tray Helper in "Configuration" tab \ "Common settings" \ "General settings".
If modem still tries to connect please read this article
Another tip: since modem users don't have connection to Internet all the time - background email checker can report some errors - you can disable it easy in "Configuration" tab \ "Email checker's settings" \ "More settings".
In the same menu you can increase default "time out" value - it's also a good idea on slow modem connections.
Q7: I have a reminder today and icon of the application flashes all the time in the toolbar tray. How can I stop it ?
It's easy - just dismiss all current and late reminders. You can do it by using "Delete reminder" button or by double clicking on reminder.
Q8: I have just scanned my PC with anti-adware/spyware application by lavasoft. It detected registry key saying that it could be a adware/spyware - this key belongs to Tray Helper ! What's going on ?
I can assure you that Tray Helper is not a spyware or adware in ANY SHAPE OR FORM. It's because AD-Aware application searches for all (unknown to this application) programs that launches with Windows. If you selected during installation of Tray Helper "running with Windows" - Tray Helper created in registry following key:
This key launches Tray Helper with Windows. But since TH is an unknown application for AD-AWARE, it detects Tray Helper as a NetRadar and flags this registry key as a possible adware. I have already sent to lavasoft (author of AD-Aware) an e-mail with request to solve this problem.
Still not convinced ? Please disable in Configuration tab / Common settings - "Running with Windows" and check your system again :)
Q9: When application starts two MS-DOS mode pop-ups appear. What is that and how can I get rid of it ?
Right now I'm working on this problem - you can get rid of it by disabling auto-upgrade notification and auto notification about important things in Configuration tab / Common settings / Generall setting. This is quiter RARE bug but if it appears on your machine - please let me know about that.
Q10: I'm a programmer - can I write my own plugin ?
SURE YOU CAN. Please read this page
for more details and SDK.
Q11: I wish I could set up and use e-mail auto-responder. But I can't enter / select the names of accounts to check. How can I do it ?
If you can't see the name of your e-mail account in auto-responder configuration dialog it means that this account is not ENABLED or SMTP server for this e-mail account is not defined. Please correct it and try again.
Q12: I use Tray Helper SHAREWARE. I don't want to pay for it. What will happen after trial period (those 30 days) ?
Well, let me remind you that using unregistered SHAREWARE version after trial period is against the license agreement. But Tray Helper will continue to work after that time - just it will show a nag screen every time you start application. Please remeber that hungry author will not be interested in creating new versions of Tray Helper and plugins ;-D
Q13: I receive a lot of spam written in Chnese or Korean language. Since I'm absolutely not familiar with those languages - it's difficult for me to set up a anti-spam filter to delete those messages. Is there an easy way to do it ?
YES, there is ! You should know that (near) every e-mail message contains hidden informaction about language set. For example recently I received a SPAM message in Korean language (I suppose). In header of this message I found this string:
Content-Type: text/html; charset="GB2312"
The most interesting part of it it is: charset="GB2312"
. If you define a spam filter that will seek for this string in HEADER of message - Tray Helper will delete or ignore near all mails written in this language !
While defining an anti-spam filter don't use the whole expression (for example: Content-Type: text/html; charset="GB2312"
) because it can be a bit different next time (for example: Content-Type: text/plain-text; charset="GB2312"
), use only charset="here-name-of-char-set".
Well, that should help in 90% of messages. But sometimes this charset-information is not present in header of message but is placed in body. I recommend you to create another spam filter with exactly the same settings that will examine bodies of messages.
You can say that this is strange since you have never seen such strings in email messages - that's true because most e-mail readers don't show HEADERS of messages and strips RAW-BODIES to create nice-looking messages. So you can see only a part of information that was actually in the message. But when you order Tray Helper to seek in body of message - application will examine a RAW-BODY. So it will be possible to detect such language-control strings.
Q14: I'm going to install new version of Tray Helper. Should I remove old version before ?
NO - it's not recommended. Just install new version over old one. Remember only about exiting Tray Helper before installing new version.
Q15: From time to time I get such message: Error loading COM module of Tray Helper... is there a fix for this?
Read this page
for more info and solutions.
Q16: I have Windows XP and on my machine there are a few users. Is that possible for each of us to have a separate installation of Tray Helper ?
YES - but you have to install TH 2.2 or above. Just while installing Tray Helper make sure to specify an unique installation path for each user. On default Tray Helper should prompt an installation path that looks like this: Tray Helper_user_name
. If it's not already occupied by another user - just confirm it. On some systems it could be required to have administrator rights for user to install Tray Helper.
Q17: Installation fails or application don't start after setup. What can I do ?
Q18: I entered registration code - but after some time (for example the following day), application asks to register again. What's wrong ?
Remember to enter your registration data EXACTLY as you received it from the author. Registration codes ARE case sensitive. If use name is something like: Tom JohnEs x3AFq
- you HAVE enter it exactly that way, you can't skip for example the last few random characters or write Johnes instead of JohnEs.
If you still have this problem please mail the author
(don't forget to attach registration data you use (user+code)).
Q19: I have a problem with configuration of mail account. There is no "user" field to fill. What is going on ?
In order to simplify "Add a new e-mail account" form - Tray Helper asks you ONLY for your e-mail address. Since in 99% of mail-boxes login is the same as the first part of your e-mail address - application extracts from e-mail you provide this part that stands before "@" and uses it as an login. For example if your email is: email@example.com
- Tray Helper will use as an login tom
But sometimes login is different - then you can enter it by clicking on "More settings", checking "Don't extract login...." check-box. Don't forget to apply changes after entering valid login into a edit-box.
Q20: "Blocking images that are hot-linked to Internet servers" - what is that ?
Now-a-days people who send spam messages are quite clever. They send you a HTML mail with their "incredible offers", quite often with images. But most of those images are not attached to message - instead they are HOT-LINKED to Internet servers of spammers.
When you open such message in any e-mail reader, application connects to server of spammer and download hot-linked images. Why it's so dangerous? Because people who send spam are able TO TRACK those downloads and verify that you use and check your e-mail account. It is VERY valuable data for world of spammers - and after such address verification - they will send more and more spam.
Tray Helper is able to parse HTML messages and block all image references to Internet servers. In order to enable / disable this feature click on "View mode" of build-in e-mail reader and select proper menu item.
Still need more help ?
Please read the Help file attached to the application you installed. If that is still not enough, feel free to contact the author.
